Why I Write the Things I Do

By Ryan Healy | November 28, 2007

Lately, as I’ve been reading other debt blogs, I’ve been realizing there’s a big difference between my circumstances and most everybody else.

For instance, yesterday I wrote about expanding yourself, including your income. This is a natural thought to me because I’m self-employed. I run my own business. But most people have jobs. So the idea of earning more money next week or next month is not a common thought.

In fact, to suggest to a person who has a job that they “just go earn more money” probably sounds a little bit crazy. I can imagine somebody thinking, “What am I going to do, ask for a raise? Get a second job? Forget it.”

For me, I simply think about taking on more clients or raising my fees or creating a new information product. These are ways I can boost my income.

How I think about money and income isn’t the only difference between me and other debt bloggers. Since I’m self-employed, it makes it difficult to stick closely to a budget. My income flows and ebbs, not like a paycheck where it’s completely predictable. I don’t know how much money I’ll make next month… or when it will arrive in my bank account. That’s just the way it is for me.

Anyway, I thought it was important for me to point out that I’m self-employed because it colors my perspective and the advice I give. Of course, if I had a job, my advice might be slightly different. Keep this in mind as you read my posts.
