Slash Your Cell Phone Bill by 25%
By Ryan Healy | January 27, 2008
I was lucky.
A friend of mine works for Verizon Wireless. He was allowed up to four cell phone accounts. For nearly three years, he gave me a phone and allowed me to use his account.
That changed this last September. He needed the account to set up an Internet connection for his wife. Which forced me to investigate which company I would sign up with for my new cell phone.
I had been with Verizon Wireless before. I had used their service for a few years prior to getting the employee account, and I was happy with their service. But they seemed a bit pricey. So did most of the other cell phone companies.
That’s when I happened on Cricket. They are not available everywhere, but they are available in most major markets. The unique thing about Cricket is all their plans include unlimited minutes. Some plans include unlimited text messages as well. Not that I use my cell phone a bunch or text message all the time; I just hate having to be aware of my usage in the first place. And I especially hate going over on minutes, which happened to me one time a few years ago.
Anyway, I signed up for Cricket and have been very happy with the service. For $30 a month I get unlimited minutes and unlimited text messages. There is no contract; I can cancel anytime.
The next closest plan at Verizon is $40 a month and includes only 450 minutes a month; but you have to pay for every text message. To get this plan, I believe you have to commit to a two-year contract. This is why I say you can slash your cell phone bill by 25% when you switch to Cricket. Most people could cut their bill even more.
If there is a disadvantage to Cricket, it’s this: their calling area is smaller than other carriers. If you go outside the calling area, you may have to pay roaming fees. I haven’t found this to be a drawback though. My calling area includes the entire Denver Metro area, including all the way south through Colorado Springs.
By switching to Cricket, you can save a minimum of 25% on your monthly bill, and probably more than that if you have a plan that includes more monthly minutes. For instance, if you have Verizon’s Select plan, it will cost you $59.99 a month. This plan includes only 450 “anytime” minutes and some text messages. If you have this plan, you could save 50% a month by switching to Cricket.

And in case you’re wondering, I was not paid to write this article. I simply think it makes sense to switch to Cricket for cell phone service. It is far less expensive and includes unlimited minutes and text messages (no more penalties for going over!).
