Ideas for an Affordable Valentine’s Day

by Ryan Healy on February 13, 2009

Don’t forget — tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. If you’re married or you’re in a relationship, it’s important to say “I Love You.” And it’s important to do something special.

Keep in mind that doing something special doesn’t have to cost a lot. Sometimes being creative is more special than spending a lot of money.

Here are a few ideas for an affordable Valentine’s Day.

1. Eat a fancy dinner at home.

No matter how “bad” you may be at cooking, just about anybody can throw together a good lasagna or spaghetti in a matter of a half hour or so.

Buy a $10-bottle of wine, make some pasta, eat a candle-light dinner at home, then follow it up with a movie and snuggling on the couch.

(Cost: $30)

2. Put a spending limit on gifts.

If you’re planning to buy gifts for each other, then put a spending limit in place — say $10 apiece or whatever.

The constraint will force you to be both frugal and creative. Sometimes you come up with really fun gift ideas this way, without breaking the bank.

To make it even more fun, go to a department store like Kohl’s, Dillards, or Nordstrom and set a time limit during which you BOTH have to find a gift for $20 or less.

The time limit and budget constraint makes it like a contest to see who can find the best gift for the least amount of money in, say, 30 minutes.

One of the best gifts/evenings my wife and I had was when we did this at a Kohls. Lots of fun!

(Cost: $20-$40)

3. Buy a new board game to play.

If you enjoy playing board games, consider buying a new game to play after dinner. There are quite a few fun games available for $15-$30.

I’ve noticed that many times the most fun you ever have playing a board game is when you’re learning how to play. So the first few games are always the most exciting.

Of course, not everybody enjoys board games, so you can take it or leave it.

(Cost: $15-$30)

Closing Thoughts

Don’t let the economy get in the way of having a good Valentine’s Day.

You can (and should) still say “I Love You.” You can (and should) still spend time together. And the best part: You can have a great evening together for as little as $50.
