Be Frugal: Avoid Brain Tumors

By Ryan Healy | April 1, 2008

Cell Phones Linked to Brain TumorsThe ultimate in being frugal may now mean avoiding brain tumors.

That’s because a highly decorated neurosurgeon named Dr. Vini Khurana has publicly declared that cell phone use may be worse than smoking when it comes to cancer risk.

Khurana is no quack.

According the article linked above, he “is considered one of the top neurosurgeons in the world, and has won 14 separate awards over the past two decades.

What’s more, Khurana has reviewed more than 100 studies linking cell phone use and cancer, and has now written a study of his own. The study is not available quite yet because it is still being peer reviewed.

Of course, there are a select few who are disputing Khurana’s claims: advocates within the cell phone industry.

But I wouldn’t put much value on their opinions. They’re not doctors, and they make a living from the cell phone industry. As with so many things, just follow the money to discover the truth.

So what does this all this mean?

Well, it means eliminating your cell phone bill may be more attractive (and frugal) than it ever was.

You’ll not only save $50 a month (or whatever you’re paying), but you may also avoid brain tumors down the road. And brain tumors ain’t cheap. The cost of removing a single brain tumor may dwarf the cost of 10 years of cell phone bills.

So… if Khurana’s link between cell phone use and brain tumors is definitive, will you get rid of yours?

Ryan — Have been enjoying your posts about debt reduction and living debt-free and your copywriting blog for quite some time. For the past few years a cell phone has been a necessity in my business but I am also concerned about the lethal effects of cell phone radiation. I recommend that you check out http://www.mercola.com for alternatives to completely ditching your cell phone. Dr. Mercola is an authority on the subject of the danger of EMF’s from not only cell phones, but also from cordless phones, wireless Internet, etc.

Bev - Thanks for chiming in! I’m glad you find my writing helpful.

I’m glad you mention wireless Internet. I’ve thought about the dangers of that, but haven’t actually done the research yet. (I use wireless Internet all the time.)

I’ll check out Mercola’s site. I used to read his stuff frequently, but haven’t been by in a while.

Great post Ryan. It got my attention, as this is an issue I’ve been studying recently.

I don’t have a cell phone. Partly because I rarely have time to get out. And when I do, it’s usually to the woods, so I don’t want anybody calling me. I had a cell phone a long time ago and found it the most annoying invention. I feel like I’m on an away team on Star Trek or something (and we know only Kirk, Spock and McCoy ever came back alive from those away teams).

That aside, I’ve read many authorities point out how lethal it is. I don’t believe it’s the receiving mechanism, but the transmitter that’s the big problem. Sending those signals out right beside your head.

Bev is right Mercola has a neat air tube system to minimize exposure. Basically a stethoscope that transmits the sound with a simple air tube. Apparently using a wire headset is more lethal because the wire picks up more radiation acting as “rabit ears.”

Best bet is to use speaker phone when you can.

I think anybody who MUST use a cell phone should be using Mercola’s air tube system. They aren’t expensive and it just makes sense not to take the risk.

More disturbing, though, is the threat of cellphone towers. They are starting to notice a rise in cancer for people living close to these towers.

Worse still is that these towers are usually on schools and churches (because the cellphone companies pay them rent).

Yeah, the wifi is an issue. Not as bad, so I undserstand, unless you sleep with your head on your router.

Still, I’m glad I bought a regular router. Had to drill a whole in the wall to run the cable through to my wife’s computer, but I’m okay with that.

That said,, cordless phone pose more problems than a cellphone in your home. Those transmitter bases are constantly pumping out a wide electromagnetic field throughout your entire house.

I’d get rid of mine, but my neighbour is a single mom who can’t afford a telephone, so we let her have one of our extensions. But we turn it off at 9pm.

That the best thing to do, if nothing else: Unplug your cordless phone base at night, turn off the wifi and cellphone. Give your body a rest from these frequencies while you sleep.

A neat energy-saving tip is just to turn the circuit breaker off for everything in the house except your fridge (and alarm system if you have one). Just cut the power off entirely. I’ve been doing this for some time now and can’t imagine sleeping with the power on.

You start to feel the difference.

This will probably save you $50 a year or more in “phantom” electrical charges.

But, yeah, for most cases a cell phone isn’t really a necessity, especially if your trying to save money. It’s a convenience and an expensive one. And as you pointed out, with health costs down the road.

Keep up the interesting angles on debt.

Thanks for such an awesome comment, John. Actually, I think you wrote a whole post!

Since you left your comment, I started turning off my wi-fi router at night. Believe it or not, it is under our bed because of where the cable is pulled into the house.

And… worse than that… I can see a cell phone tower from my office window!

I use the cell phone very little. I leave it off a lot of the time. We use it the most when my wife and I go out on a date and need a way for the babysitters to call us. Otherwise, it’s of little use.

Fortunately, I have Cricket, which doesn’t require a contract. So I can stop it anytime without penalty. The question is, should I?

And should I replace my cordless phone with a corded phone?

Living in the 21st Century isn’t very simple…

Yeah, I guess it looks like a post, in retrospect. It was just a hot topic for me, as I just discovered it a while back and have been diving in.

Wow, under you bed? You may want to look at getting an extension for the incoming cable, so you could move the router to another room. Even when you turn these things off they still carry a lot residual radiation.

If you have any metal parts to you bed (e.g. box spring) this is especially dangerous, because the metal in your bed will amplify the effects.

It all sounds a little extreme, but it wasn’t too long ago that scientists were playing around with uranium with their bare hands. I believe Dr. Maurie Curie’s books actually had to be put away, because they were radiative from her touching them so much.

Keep up the great posts. I love this blog.
